UK carrier Vodafone has teamed up with mobile payments tech gurus PowaTag to enable pay-as-you-go customers to top up their balances with just a quick scan of a QR code.

The idea behind this is to cut out having to punch out long coupon codes or having to call customer support.

With the PowaTag system all you have to do is download the PowaTag app for Android and iOS and add your payment method.

The next step is get that QR code – for this all you need is to wander to Vodafone, Argos, Tesco, Co-op and BrightHouse stores, with Asda, Sainsbury’s and Wilko joining the party next month.

The beauty of this is that the store doesn’t even need to be open if they display a poster containing the QR code in the window. I can see these popping up at bus stops, on tube adverts and that kind of thing in the future.
