Stick it to the Man on PlayStation 3 review

Stick it to the Man mainStick It To The Man is a game full of surprises. It is one of the most bizarre, surreal experiences I’ve ever had in the gaming world.

You play as the loveable Ray, a kind hearted guy who unfortunately gets hit on the head in a strange accident. Thankfully he’s OK, he just happens to now have a giant pink spaghetti arm coming out of his brain. That’s a relief. Not only that, but it can help him read minds. Sure. That’s not all. He can then take a thought that someone has out of their brain and plant it into someone else’s brain to make them do something he needs them to do.

Stick It To The Man sure is a warped world to play in. The coolest part about this world? It is an absolutely glorious experience which deserves to be in everyone’s Top 10 games of the year.

Stick it To The Man is not just about sticking it to a character called The Man. It is about that, but it’s also intended to be taken very literally.

On his journey, Ray encounters many paper walls and stickers. With the paper walls, you can grab the fold and rip them off to unveil other characters hidden behind them.

You can then use your mind reading powers to take their thoughts and stick them around. More specifically, you can plant the stickers on them to cause a reaction from another character, or in their head to plant an idea. The journey is a crazy one. You’ll make your way through Ray’s world as you try to decipher what’s real and what’s not. On top of all this, poor Ray is being chased for a crime he didn’t commit. I guess you could say Ray is getting a lot of stick. Ba-dum tish! OK the game’s funnier than I am. Where was I?

Stick it to the man 1At its core, I guess you would describe Stick It To The Man as a dark humoured puzzle platformer. It’s a hard one to put into words, but imagine a dark LittleBigPlanet with a little Roald Dahl thrown in. It even goes a little bit Ratchet & Clank towards the end.

All this is played to the flugal horned sound of mesmerising jazz. The best thing though, is how incredibly fun it is to play.

The story is truly enthralling throughout so you constantly want to find out more. I couldn’t turn it off. But it also has these great little sub plots going on between others character’s that are equally as fascinating.

It is these characters that make Stick It to the Man as special as it is. Take the guy who thinks he’s a piece of cheese. He’s not sure you get it, so decides to rap to you. You know, about being a piece of cheese. Or there’s the homicidal, elderly disco dancer who judging by his thoughts doesn’t just kill it on the dancefloor. There’s also a Taxidermist who is so good that she can actually stuff the animals back to life. I could go on and on. The game refuses to let you get bored for one minute as it keeps on delivering. It’s hilarious too, providing many laugh out loud moments.

Stick it to the man 2Whilst reaching into other people’s brains you will have to use your own one to put 2 and 2 together. There are 10 chapters in all and each one is riddled with head scratching conundrums. It never feels like a chore as solving each problem is really gratifying. When everything comes together you’re left with such a rewarding feeling and can’t believe how much fun you’re having in the process. Another plus is the trophy list. It’s a very doable 100% consisting of 15 bronze :bronze and one gold :gold. I got the 100% in 3 sittings and had an awesome time doing so. You will get a lot naturally through general story play, but the one’s remaining are really refreshing and genuinely fun to get.

Stick it to the man 3Another thing worth noting is that the art on show here is staggeringly impressive. The team members responsible for the look of this game deserve never ending high fives. And don’t even get me started on the voice acting. It is consistently brilliant throughout. If I ever see the people responsible, I’ll probably give them a standing ovation wherever they go. Well I would, but I’d probably be too busy playing their game.

Zoink Games and Ripstone invite you into the insane, mind boggling world of Stick It To The Man and man, what a world it is. Sheer brilliance.
