LG Aka – the phone with a personality and backstory

lg akaIf the closest you thought your smartphone would get to having a personality is Siri, Cortana or Google Now, think again. The LG Aka is the new expressive pocketable personality.

LG has unveiled the LG Aka (pronounced as Aw-kuh) smartphone family which have eyes that peep out from a three-quarter case.

Not only do those eyes blink and move but this phone actually shows different expressions as you wave your hand before the front-facing camera. LG is transforming the commonplace phone handset to an emotive gadgety buddy. Think of it as a Tamagotchi telephone.

The family of four each have distinct personalities and backstories.

The four personalities are:

  • Eggy (in yellow colour): is the new Romeo in town, who falls in love easily
  • Wooky (in white colour): is cute to look at, but always talks in slang
  • Soul (in blue colour): is fun loving, loves music and beer
  • Yoyo (in bright pink colour): is the only style loving female personality, who can’t resist colas and burgers which make her weight to yo-yo (Hmmm… bit of a dangerous gender stereotype)

AKA phone gifObviously there’s the gamification aspect of having a phone with a personality, as does the chance to buy accessories. You can buy and swap in cases of other colours to expand your retinue of Aka pals. The phone automatically detects the personality based on an identity chip set on the inside back cover.

The LG Aka Android smartphone is a typically mid-range offering aimed at the teen-twenties market. It comes equipped with a 5-inch 720p screen, quad-core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, 16 GB of storage, 1 GB RAM, and a 2,610 mAh battery.

I think this is quite a novel idea which has the potential to take off as people might connect to one of the characters. If and when they get bored of that one, they can buy another case and try out another.

The LG Aka is planned for only a release in Korea, the price is 500,000 South Korean Won (about $456 USD).

No news if it will ever be launched internationally.
