Huawei AI Cube revealed at IFA 2018

Huawei AI Cube is a smart speaker, 4G router and Alexa voice controller.

Huawei is jumping into the smart speaker market, with the AI Cube. Furthermore, they are bringing in their router know-how and doubling up the new device as a 4G router.

Although not quite as advanced as other 4G routers in Huawei’s stable, the AI Cube does add Alexa.

Having Alex built-in does mean that you will have instant access to over 5,000 skills. Additionally, you also know that it will work with 20,000 smart home devices from 3,500 unique brands. I can totally see why Huawei went with Alexa has its first partner. However, I would not rule out them bringing other services on-board, such as Google Assistant, at a later date.

The AI Cube is 8.6-inches tall and has a 4.57-inches diameter. The speaker weighs in at 900g.

On the 4G side, the router is equipped with a Cat.6 LTE modem. You should, therefore, expect speeds of up to 300Mbps, with Wi-Fi 802.11ac (dual-band) offering connectivity between devices of up to 1200Mbps.

Turning the device over you will find the SIM card slot and an Ethernet port. The 15w driver with an aluminium diaphragm is augmented by a 400ml ‘big sound cavity’ and passive radiators.

Naturally, there’s far-field voice recognition to help to chat with Alexa, and Huawei also stated support for the HiLink app to manage the router. Additionally, there was some talk of Mesh network support.

Price and availability

A price and the release date is yet to be confirmed, as is the reason for calling it a cube.
