Google Web Designer – free HTML5 art tool

google webdesignerYesterday Google added a new tool to its wide array of offerings, and this time they have built something for the web design community.

Google Web Designer looks to be quite a powerful tool that lets you easily create interactive and cross-platform HTML5-based designs and vector-style artwork using an ‘integrated visual and code interface’.

HTML5 is widely seen as the standard that everyone on the Web should adopt.

Google describes HTML5 as a “universal language for building beautiful, engaging content that can run across desktops, smartphones, and tablets.”

Google is hoping that their Web Designer will help make HTML5 accessible to people throughout the advertising industry, getting Web developers closer to the goal of “build once, run anywhere.”

So what exactly can Google Web Designer do? Here are some of the features it offers:

  • Full 3D authoring environment utilizing CSS3
  • Automated and intuitive design tools to let you create animated HTML5
  • Publish designed ads directly to DoubleClick Studio or AdMob
  • In-built illustration tools
  • Choice of either Design View or Code View

If this piques your interest you should read the getting started guide. Google is also asking for feedback, which you can provide on its user forum and Google+ page.

Even thought Google Web Designer is classed as a public beta Google does use the tag with little regard for its meaning (Gmail was in beta for ages, remember?).

That said, the company states it is “working hard over the next couple quarters to add new features and improvements.”
