Microsoft is apparently beavering away on Windows 8 if this huge leak is anything to go by.

All kinds of slides and notes have slipped out from Microsoft’s tight security via Dell and landed on Microsoft Kitchen’s pages.

It looks like the shiny new Windows 8 app store will follow the Zune-style interface and it will automatically sense which device you’re using.  As well as featuring home-grown Microsoft apps it will also peddle software from other firms and device makers.

Microsoft seems to still be gunning for tablets and laptops even though the last thing I recall about the Slate’s operating system was that webOS was the favoured choice. Windows 8 is still looking to be your tablet or touchscreen desk-tops BFF.

They’ve even rendered a neat looking desk-top puter which has a slightly Appley taste if you ask me – but, I’m guessing, this will be a touchscreen number.

Talking about Apple flavours appearing in the Microsoft documents – There’s a rather curious slide entitled “How Apple does it: a virtuous cycle”. It looks like Microsoft admires the Apple user experience and even uses the simplistic Jobsism of  “it just works”.

The Windows 8 app store will also be pushing Microsoft’s cloud-based computing nirvana. Office 2010 web apps are very much in evidence and the plan seems to be that your apps and settings to follow you as you swap from device to device.

How do you feel about your puter recognising you?  Well, it seems machines loaded with Win8 will be able to do just like that in a Kinect kinda way.  The system will use your puter’s webcam in order to recognise your face.  I suppose that this will do away with forgetting your passwords when trying to log in but could this also lead to other Kinect-style additions such as gesture control?

Don’t worry though – we’ve all got plenty of time to guess what else will appear in Windows 8 as Microsoft have a release date loosely pencilled in for 2012 ;)

What would you want/expect from your OS by then?

If you watched the webcast yesterday you will have seen Microsoft finally out its two new ‘Pink’ handsets whose mission is to offer the most complete social networking experience around.

Taking the baton from Danger‘s Sidekick these “KIN” are squarely aimed at the younger users (under 25) that Microsoft has dubbed the “social generation.”

Microsoft’s Robbie Bach said, “The KIN phone brings together everything important to socially connected people in a way that’s completely natural for them.”

There’s two flavours of KIN.

KIN ONE is a small touchscreen QWERTY slider that has a touch of the Palm Pre’s about it. It comes with 4GB of flash memory for storage and a 5 megapixel camera optimised for low-light (night club) use.

KIN TWO is the more traditional-looking QWERTY slider. It sports a larger, wider touchscreen. It has 8GB of storage and an 8 megapixel camera that can shoot 720p HD video.

Both handsets don’t bother with either the new Windows 7 Series or Windows Mobile 6.5; instead opting for a new cloud-based OS and graphical user interface.

It seems pretty straight-forward: users can drag and drop items, pictures and links into chat windows as well as upload any photos taken to the KIN server from where you can access stuff on your puter via the ‘KIN-Spot’.

They also come equipped with the Zune HD media player built in – oddly for a new phone there’s no app store!

It looks like Vodafone has jumped on-board as the KIN’s UK launch partner.

Patrick Chomet, of Voda said that “mobile social networking is having increasingly strong appeal for our customers. KIN has a unique and intuitive way of engaging with the user, enabling them to share experiences and stay in touch with their friends easily.”

Both KIN handsets are landing in the UK in Autumn and, ignoring the attempts at being ‘street’ these should do fairly well.

What do you reckon?
