It’s happened!

10,000,000,000 songs have been sold through iTunes.

So, who’s top of the iPops then?

Guitarists, look away now as there’s not much evidence of axe-weilding amongst the 20 most-downloaded iTunes songs of all time.

The only ‘real’ bands spotted in the charts are Coldplay (in at 5 with Vida la Vida) and Plain White Ts (in at 18 with Hey There Delilah). No, Subset aren’t there quite yet ;)

The Black Eyed Peas top the iTunes most downloaded song chart with ‘I Gotta Feeling’ – quite remarkable for a track that only hit iTunes on March 30 2009. The quartet also Boom Boom Powed to the number 3 spot.

Unsurprisingly, if you keep an eye on the charts, Lady Gaga also grabbed a pair of spots with ‘Poker Face’ at number 2 and ‘Just Dance’ getting number 6.

I’d like to think that bands aren’t out of fashion rather that their fans would rather own CD’s or even vinyl.

Am I right or just holding onto a mistaken notion that bands can still be of worth in these technologically advanced times?

Here’s the list:

1) “I Gotta Feeling,” Black Eyed Peas
2) “Poker Face,” Lady GaGa
3) “Boom Boom Pow,” Black Eyed Peas
4) “I’m Yours,” Jason Mraz
5) “Viva la Vida,” Coldplay
6) “Just Dance,” Lady GaGa featuring Colby O’Donis
7) “Low,” Flo Rida (featuring T-Pain)
8 ) “Love Story,” Taylor Swift
9) “Bleeding Love,” Leona Lewis
10) “TiK ToK,” Ke$ha
11) “Disturbia,” Rihanna
12) “So What,” Pink
13) “I Kissed a Girl,” Katy Perry
14) “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” Beyoncé
15) “Hot N Cold,” Katy Perry
16) “Stronger,” Kanye West
17) “Live Your Life,” T.I. (featuring Rihanna)
18) “Hey There Delilah,” Plain White T’s
19) “Right Round,” Flo Rida
20) “Party in the U.S.A.,” Miley Cyrus

Twitter Tops English Word of the Year List

by Jay Garrett on November 30, 2009

Subset TwitterAh, Twitter.

There’s definitely those for and those against the micro-blogging phenomenon but no matter which side you’re on chances are that you’ve uttered the ‘T’ word.

So much so that you’re responsible for making Twitter the most used English word of 2009!

Out of the 1.58 billion English speakers in the world, it looks like, plenty many are using Twitter and in doing so they have made the brand-name even more popular than the words: Obama and H1N1 – that’s swine flu to you and me.

The list has been compiled by the The Global Language Monitor who annually track the most popular words and phrases in the media and on the interwebs (including blogs and social media sites).

This has been helped, no doubt, by celebrities and “celebs” making and breaking news – from the adorable and gadget-friendly Stephen Fry to the…. errr… Jordan/Katie Price PR machine.

The most popular technology phrase for 2009 was “Cloud Computing” which came in at number 6 in the list of top 10 phrases. The most popular phrases of 2009 included “King of Pop”, “Swine Flu” and “Mayan Calendar” (which ends its cycle on 12/21/2012 and is also a Hollywood flick featuring John Cusack).

“In a year dominated by world-shaking political events, a pandemic, the after effects of a financial tsunami and the death of a revered pop icon, the word Twitter stands above all the other words. Twitter represents a new form of social interaction, where all communication is reduced to 140 characters,” said Paul JJ Payack, President of The Global Language Monitor.

So – do you use Twitter? If so, what for?
Send me your Twitter ID and I’ll Follow you if I’m not already doing so.
