Near Field Communication seems to be on the cards for Apple’s next gen iPhone looking at the new Apple patents.

Imagine being able to use your iPhone to open doors, as a travel card or to unlock your Macbook.

Late last year there was hinatge in another Apple patent that RFID and their Grab and Go app might be linked to similar effect, but it seems that Apple has decided to go with NFC tech instead – well, they might just be making sure both ideas are covered by patents.

It makes sense to assume that the NFC cleverness would then be ported over to the iPod Touch, Macbooks and Macbook Pro and the Apple iPad.

This could also be a good thing for O2 now that other providers are offering the Apple handhelds as O2 has already worked with Nokia on their NFC packing phones that double-up as an Oyster Card and a Mobile Wallet.

London Olympics organisers are also pushing that the NFC-based ‘wave and pay’ will be a huge part of the games allowing you to wave your NFC packing Barclaycards at burger vans, beer tents and merch stands to save you carrying around cash which, let’s face it, is so 90’s.

Everyone will be expecting something smashing from the iPhone 4G now that Microsoft seems to be flavour of the month with their good-looking Windows Mobile 7 and Project Pink Phones on the horizon.

What else would you expect to appear on the new iPhone?

Let me know your hopes and dreams for iPhone 4G

apple-iphone-4g-partsAs my contract is almost coming to an end this news is quite interesting – perhaps a tad galling for those who pounced on the iPhone 3Gs though.

China OnTrade lists the “Apple iPhone 4 Generation Midboard” for $23.42, in stock and shipping within 12 business days.

The midboard itself is unremarkable as it doesn’t really give away anything about the phone itself.

Same goes for what is supposed to be the new phone’s SIM tray that’s available for $14.05 starting October 23rd for the 4th generation iPhone / iTablet…

But there’s more still to come!

“We also have final pictures of iPhone 4 Generation with amazingly beautiful back cover that will come here up soon. Please check for updates,”

Before you say “so what?!” China OnTrade has proven reliable before. In May, the company sold parts that it claimed were spares from a next-generation iPhone and as Gizmodo points out – those parts showed up in teardowns of the iPhone 3GS when it was released in June.

The other bit of news is that Apple seems to be testing iPhone prototypes with built-in RFID readers.

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) allows devices to sense embedded chips and exchange data without making contact.

Apple has filed several RFID related patents for an ID app capable of using an RFID sensor, a way to sense and connect to WiFi networks with RFID and a touchscreen RFID tag reader.

So swipe and pay could only be a 4G iPhone away and just imagine all the funky apps that work with RFID tagging – Perhaps it could work with the Nabaztags and Mir:ror and with real world publications to add an extra dimension :)

Hopefully it will be less clunky than this effort – no offence ;)

Exciting innit?

I’ve just received a link to a rather groovy vid.
RFID technology has plenty of potential but, to be honest, it’s not really appearing ‘all over the shop’ just yet.
One reason for this could be he lack of RFID readers (short of the Mir:ror by the Nazbatag makers).
This hasn’t dampened the touchpaper for the people behind [...]

Mir:rors, RFID and Rabbits – Oh My!

The Mir:ror tag is a little misleading as it’s not reflective (as far as I can see) and you’ll need to connect it via USB to a puter so hanging it on your hallway wall maybe a little tricky.
Instead of checking yourself out before you leave home you’ll be waving your various possessions over its USB-connected sensor.
Why? [...]

We have got used to any new gaming machine being released to a fan-fare and dancing girls and perhaps huge queues outside major stores – that is not the way Dutch company, Swinx, rolls.

Swinx’s machine utilises RFID technology and is [...]
