Please welcome the Leica V-LUX 20.

It’s the first compact to feature the famous red dot that comes equipped with built-in GPS.

The Leica V-LUX 20 has the lovely Leica DC-Vario-Elmar 4.1-49.2mm lens as well as rocking a 12x optical zoom, 720p/60fps Motion JPEG video recording, 11-point AF, SD/SDHC/SDXC storage and a 460,000 pixel 3-inch LCD display so you can enjoy your handiwork straight away.

As a GPS virgin, Leica have not simply settled for adding GPS data to your snaps. The V-LUX 20 also includes a list of 500,000 points of interest in 73 different countries to help you find some camera-fodder.

Along with manual settings, the Leica V-LUX 20 has a range of automatic modes for folk who prefer to point and shoot and image stabilisation for the shaky handed. The Indiana Jones-style brown leather case comes as an optional extra.

Where the Leica V-LUX 20 costs £495 (and extra £70 for that case) and will no doubt seem like a bargain for those tempted by Leica M9 fans of Panasonic may notice a similarity to one of their own.

The same lens, sensor, LCD, and GPS feature on Pan’s DMC-ZS7 (or TZ10) which lists for just £299 (Here’s a link to it on Amazon – Panasonic Lumix TZ10 Digital Camera (12.1MP, 12x Optical Zoom) 3.0 inch LCD – Black. It’s slightly smaller, records HD video in AVCHD Lite format but lacks that red dot.

If you can live without that you could save a coupla hundred ;)

The Leica V-LUX 20 will be on the shelves in a few weeks.

It was only a matter of time wasn’t it?

The Micro Four Thirds market is growing enough for Panasonic to whip out the first Micro Four Thirds video camera!

The Panasonic AG-AF100 will be able to use any of the interchangable Micro Four Thirds lenses that are already out there – obviously lenses borrowed from the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 as well as those from the Olympus Pen E-P2 and, with a mount adapter, the new camcorder will also be able to take lenses made by other companies like Nikon, Canon and Leica. You’ll be spoilt for choice!

The AF100 shoots 1080p at 24 frames per second which is recorded in H.264 format. You get an onboard stereo mic as well as a pair of XLR inputs for alternative mic’ing.

Your flicks are stored via memory cards shoved in the to two SD-card slots. The camera supports SDHC cards as well as the clever SDXC cards which can offer up a stonking 2TB of storage!

I’m guessing that this AF100 camcorder will be popular amongst those talented amateurs and film students out there as well as those filmmakers on tighter budgets or filming in tighter spaces.

If Panasonic follows the lead made by their still Micro Four Thirds offerings it’s safe to say that more pro video 4/3 cameras may well follow.

Let’s hope the real thing is priced as nice as the render looks ;)

First picture I saw of this little Panasonic lead me to believe that it was a neat portable LCD Television. Gah – how wrong and foolish do I feel now? What it is, in fact, is Panasonic‘s new MW-10 “multimedia audio system photo frame”. Not only will it show pictures held on either its 4GB [...]

Thumbnail image for Panasonic GF1 – Retro Inspired Micro Four-Thirds Leaked

I loved the Panasonic G1 and it proved itself to be idiot proof as I almost won a competition with it when I had one to review. Now it seems that Panasonic has checked out the Olympus E-P1 and thought retro is where it’s at. Say hello to the Panasonic GF1. So, what’s the difference [...]

I have a soft spot for Panasonic cameras and now they’ve announced that it is updating its FZ28 model with a new version packing an 18x optical super zoom. The new snapper was announced on Monday and is named the DMC-FZ35 in the US and the DMC-FZ38 in the UK – slightly confusing for the [...]

This odd Dali-esque gel remote comes courtesy of Panasonic’s concept dept. The control lays limp when not in use, pulsating with a soft light. But when it detects a warm hand coming to grip it and put it to use it stiffens – ready for action! The remote is made from soft, flesh-like gel and [...]

If you have hardwood floors and love robots to do the tedious task of wiping up after you then the Fukitorimushia floor-cleaning robot should be on top of your wishlist. It inches along wriggling your floor clean like a cleaning compulsive caterpillar. The Fukitorimushi (“wipe-up bug”) has been thought-up by Panasonic and is wrapped-up in a sticky nanocloth [...]

Panasonic G1 – So Simple To Use I Almost Won A Competition!

November 13, 2008 Click to read more →

You may have read my review about the Panasonic G1 a week or so ago. I was impressed and found it pretty easy to use – this comes from someone who basically points and shoots. The people that Panasonic allowed to run rampant with the pre-production models in order to review and feedback to the [...]

Panasonic G1 Hands-on – HD Version To Come

October 30, 2008 Click to read more →

Cast your minds back to September 12th where I wrote about the new Panasonic Lumix G1. Well, I’ve spent a week with the clever four-thirds camera and have been pleasantly surprised. I’m not a photographer; never claimed to be, and probably never will be classed as such – but I do enjoy taking snaps. So, [...]

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 – Best of Both Worlds?

September 12, 2008 Click to read more →

What’s not a full DSLR but not a standard point ‘n’ shoot camera? Not sure? Check out Panasonic‘s first Micro ‘Four Thirds-standard camera’, the Lumix DMC-G1. It has the bragging rights to being the world’s smallest and lightest camera that takes interchangeable lenses. The 12.1-megapixel camera uses a format that ditches the internal mirror and prism while maintaining [...]

Panasonic DMC-TZ5 – No More Rubbish Snaps?

Fresh from the Panasonic Imaging Event I have news about some new Lumix cameras that you might be interested in. First off I had a grope around with the new FX500. It’s a good looking machine and the main draw for me was its touch screen LCD viewer. It actually made me want to explore [...]

Panasonic Lifewall

There has been rumours of a 150″ Plasma being produced by Panasonic. What has been spotted was possibly the most well guarded thing the sleuths from Engadget saw. They couldn’t manage a good gawp at the front but did get round the back of the substantial structure.  At first it was thought that they had also discovered [...]
