8GB Apple iPhone 3GS Coming Soon

by Jay Garrett on December 29, 2009

To me this is very plausible.

It seems that Apple may be dropping the 8gb iPhone 3G in favour of a similarly memoried 3Gs.

A forum user on the German ‘apfeltalk‘ ordered a regular refurbed 8GB iPhone 3G and that’s exactly what he got.

But – the interesting thing was that the packaging was for an 8GB version of the latest model, the 3GS!

As everyone here surely knows – you can only get the 3Gs in 16GB and 32GB versions. This means an unlikely typo on the packaging or Apple has got their new boxes all mixed up with the outgoing stock – ooopsy!

User .David commented on the forums (translated via Google Translate):

“Seems to be an iPhone 3G (back and no compass, FW) 3.0.1 on it. However, the packaging is clearly designed for an iPhone 3G [S] 8GB. Ordered was a refurbished 3G iPhone 8GB.

Vote: who have a refurbished iPhone 3G in a new packaging of the packaged iPhone 3G [S] 8GB, because the enhancement is clearly new. Which clearly indicates that the sale of the iPhone 3G [S] 8GB immediately imminent.”

When you weigh up the facts:

  • The 3G model is now over 18 months old.
  • It looks like Apple’s building up to launch a fourth model in June.
  • It doesn’t make sense to have three different models on the market at the same time.

Apple will be holding an event on the 26th of January so as well as the iSlate we might see the entry-level 3Gs there ;)

Apple Streams Underworld Gig ‘Live’ on iPhone

by Jay Garrett on August 11, 2009

underworldApple has managed a couple of things with a little help from those electronic music makers – Underworld.

As well has showing off how good the video camera and 3.0 software update it is they may have ‘altered’ (or abused) the meaning of ‘live streaming’.

The Underworld gig in San Francisco is being claimed as the first to be streamed live from the device using the Akarmi HTTP video streaming protocol – nope, I’d never heard of it before either.

Unsurprisingly Apple has been questioned about it’s ‘live streaming’ claims as the concert was filmed over the weekend and wasn’t aired until the next day.

This means that it wasn’t streamed live, but it was a live performance broadcast as live? Cupertino – tsk, tsk.

The Akarmi tech is making quite a name for itself as it’s able to handle a large number of visitors to the video stream without falling over in a big mess.

It’s also smart enough to adjust the bit rate of the video depending on the speed and reliability of your connection so your playback should be smooth.

Sounds kinda groovy to me :)

I have a 16Gb iPhone and find the memory ok and usable but those rocking the 8Gb version do cite that lack of storage is a bit of a sticking point.
So a 4Gb version might not be the best bet – however, the price may make people overlook that memory issue.
The new 4GB iPhone 3G [...]
