HTC Legend – Apple Flavoured Android?

by Jay Garrett on February 16, 2010

HTC have been busy and have unveiled a number of new mobiles at the MWC.

Thing is that, in my opinion, none of them look as lovely as the HTC Legend.

The body is carved from a single piece of aluminum – Mmmmm….. unibody….. I hope Apple are watching! ;)

Under that gorgeous hood purrs Android 2.1 wrapped up in HTC Sense.

It’s fitted with a 3.2 inch capacitive AMOLED screen with a res of 320 x 480 pixels.

The Legend sports a 5.0 megapixel snapper that’s paired up with autofocus and flash.

This is all pushed along by a 600 MHz processor and 512MB ROM and 384MB of RAM.

There’s a microSD slot to increase it’s capacity as well as the now expected Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.

I’m particularly digging this “helicopter view”. Perhaps another inspiration from Apple – think Mac OS X’s exposé.

With Helicopter you get to be able to pinch the screen to view all the five Android homescreens which helps you jump from widget to widget with ease.

Social Networked butterflies will get plenty use out of the new FriendStream. This pulls together all status updates, photos and links from your various social networking sites (Twitter, Facebook and Flickr are the ones supported at the mo), but you can still use the individual widgets and apps if that’s how you roll.

It’s out in Europe late March/early April – go on; admit it. It’s nice :)

Google Buzz Rattles Microsoft and Yahoo!

by Jay Garrett on February 10, 2010

Google looks like it’s fancying some of the social network pie with Buzz.

Google Buzz is based around Gmail and, like other places, lets you share information, photos videos and status updates. It also connects with Flickr and Twitter so you can spread your endless, pointless news with everyone you know and others that you’ve managed to collect.

The Google Buzz mobile service geotags your updates so folk know where you were when you saw that cute cat or police car getting clamped.

If you’ve got a Gmail account it should be coming over to you in the next few days.

Bradley Horowitz, Google’s vice-president of product marketing, says: “There’s so much opportunity, we can wire this up in so many ways with other parts of Google, other parts of the internet.”

Google Buzz will look over your existing Gmail account and will point out updates and media from contacts you chat with frequently. Don’t freak out though – you can alter privacy settings so you can control your info-flow.

Google founder Serge Brin has already suggested that Buzz, IM and email will eventually become one.

It seems that Google has rattled some cages with this announcement with Microsoft arguing that: “Busy people don’t want another social network, what they want is the convenience of aggregation.” Then nodded at Hotmail which happens to have Flickr, Twitter and Facebook integration.

Then Yahoo! tweeted: “Two years after Yahoo! launched Buzz, Google follows suit. Check out the original: http://buzz.yahoo.com/” Ouch!

So, do we need another social network platform or is Microsoft right about the integration thing?

But from another standpoint – it’s a very small, cleverly made, drill!!!
I’m just disappointed that S8 didn’t make a tiny holster for it and wear it [...]
