EA’s CEO,John Riccitiello, accidentally let slip that Sony has been referring to the motion-sensing accessory as the “Gem” at a media conference in New York. Ooopsy!
During his speech Riccitiello said: “Natal [Microsoft's motion sensing game solution] and Gem, these are likely to bring new consumers into the marketplace”.
Sony Computer Entertainment of America director of comms has since told gaming blog Kotaku “We haven’t announced a final name at this point” and that “Gem” was in fact “an early code name for the product”.
Sony flashed the magic-wand motion controller at E3 and it works with the PlayStation Eye camera and claims to offer image recognition, depth detection, and gyros for a more interactive gaming experience.
Whether or not it keeps that name, the Gem system is due to be available Spring 2010 – launch details are still a being kept super-secret…. perhaps another slip soon?

The PS3 Slim has been bouncing around the interweblogosphere for a while now and there’s even been pictures of the new console and its packaging but no one really had an idea when, if at all, the thing would bounce into the stores.
Until now!
How about this month? How’s that grab ya?
The folk over at TechRadar spotted the rumoured shelf date for the PS3 Slim on the Taiwanese site UDN, which claims that Sony has signed production contracts with both Foxconn and Pegatron to produce the beachbodied PS3 - with the first stock arriving at Sony’s door in July….. like anytime now!
OK – so Sony might not actually get them into the shops this month here in Europe but there’s a better than even chance that if you live in Japan you may well be able to get the skinny PS3 this month.
If you take July as the Japanese shelf date then I’d guess August/September to be a reasonable expectation for the UK date.
UDN also suggests that this will be the last PS3 - claiming ‘a next-gen console based on Sony’s motion controller is due in spring 2010.’
So – would it be worth getting the Slim as, in essence, your spanky new PS3 Slim could have just one year of life in it as a cutting edge console?
Mind you, it might be nicely cheap by then.
Will you be updating?
