You may have seen that the iconic, but short-lived, DeLorean DMC-12 is going back to the future with a fully-electric powertrain. Now we can all enjoy this gorgeously updated 80s automobile in action.
The original DeLorean DMC-12 began production back in 1986 – unfortunately it didn’t quite live up to expectations so, hopefully, this new version will change those perceptions thanks to the addition of a 200bhp electric motor which should whisk the DeLorean EV from 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds.
It’s built by the Texas-based DeLorean Motor Company and it’s expected to hit the road by 2013. It was first displayed publicly at the international DeLorean Owners Event in Houston, Texas, featuring a new interior complete with an iPhone dock and bespoke steering wheel.
The company have admitted that the 90Kg batteries do add to the DeLorean EVs already substantial kerbweight but that they have been positioned in order to give the car a 35/65 weight-distribution.
This new fully-electric DMC-12 is made up of around 80% original parts and the suspension has been up-rated for improved performance so cornering and stopping from the 125MPH expected top speed should be a lot smoother and controllable.
As yet there is no official price-tag for the DMC-12 EV but I’d still want to add one of these
Check out the first video of the DeLorean EV in action below. It is shot from inside the car – but we all already know what the outside looks like, right?
